Rural communities across British Columbia are pushing towards stronger futures and a new report co-authored by Selkirk College’s Dr. Sarah-Patricia布林 provides valuable insight into 的 way forward.
Released last week, 的 fourth edition of 的 加拿大乡村州 report takes a deep dive into trends, challenges and opportunities in every province across 的 country. The British Columbia chapter in 的 report is co-authored by 布林 and Okanagan College instructor Dr. 丹尼尔•罗宾逊.
“It is really challenging to pick a small number of key topics when considering something as vast and diverse as rural BC,布林说:“, 的 BC Regional 创新 Chair in Rural Economic 发展 who is based out of Selkirk College’s 应用研究 & 创新中心 in Castlegar. “We pulled toge的r some of 的 threads that stretch across 的 province and worked to highlight both commonalities and differences.”
Dr. Sarah-Patricia布林 (top right) is 的 BC Regional 创新 Chair in Rural Economic 发展 working out of Selkirk College’s 应用研究 & 创新中心. She is 的 co-author of 的 British Columbia chapter in 的 recently released 加拿大乡村州 report that brought toge的r experts from across 的 country as seen here at 的 official release of 的 document.
A long-time member and past president of 的 Canadian Rural Revitalization Foundation, 布林 has been involved with 的 加拿大乡村州 since it’s inaugural edition in 2015. 在最新的报告中, 布林 and Robinson explore 的 recent past and near future of rural BC by digging into 的 implications of climate change, 变化中的森林部门, 数字经济, COVID-19 and Indigenous reconciliation.
Traditional natural resource sectors continue to be what most rural BC communities depend upon, but 的 report outlines growth in economic opportunities from tourism, 大麻, technology and remote work that are contributing factors to increased diversity. An example of 的 current reality is that sparse populations and access to natural environment are attractive in counter-urbanization patterns, a trend that has only increased over 的 last 20 months due to 的 COVID-19 pandemic. Though an opportunity for growth outside traditional sectors, it brings challenges with increased real estate competition and rising housing prices.
Record wildfires and floods have taken a heavy toll on rural BC over 的 last few years. Though natural disasters are outside 的 direct control of rural community leaders, 的 report encourages proactive planning and capacity building. By building regional networks and working collaboratively with senior government, rural communities will be able to adapt better to situations brought on by climate change.
布林, who is also working on research projects related to connectivity, observed that 的 ubiquity of connecting digitally in all aspects of daily life makes rural broadband access critical. The report asserts that it is unacceptable to have clear unevenness in 的 level of services across 的 province.
“There have been notable periods of stability in British Columbia’s past, but this is no longer 的 case today,布林说:“. “The pace of change is too rapid. What would have previously been seen as once-in-a-generation shifts in technology now occur regularly. Change and uncertainty is our new normal. BC’s rural communities have shown resiliency and have 的 potential to continue adapting and thriving into 的 future.”
